Bike On NZ’s “Teenagers Bike On” is a simple concept that aims to increase the number of teenage girls (13 to 17yrs) who bike regularly by discussing the possibilities of the “joy of biking” and the potential flow on benefits such as increased health and well being, increased confidence and self esteem, and increased traffic-flow skills etc.
Bike On NZ provides a live 30 minute multi-media presentation that informs the students about the positive benefits of biking. This is followed up with the donation of a fleet of bikes to the school. It is then up to the students and school to decide how best to make use of these bikes.
Hastings Girls High School is the pilot school for the Teenagers Bike On program. The feedback from pupils and staff has been overwhelmingly positive with a core group of aprox 15 very enthusiastic girls having formed a group within the school called TBO - Teenagers Bike On. They are already promoting biking to their friends and families.
Teenagers Bike On is supported by New Zealand’s three most recognized biking organizations, Bike NZ, CAN and The Ministry of Health and NZTA’s Bike Wise. All three are fully supportive of the initiative and their endorsements add credibility to the campaign.
